Originally a Land Surveyor and Site Engineer I returned to University as a
mature student to study the Human mind; in which I maintain a passionate
interest. At University I was particularly interested in Cognitive
Psychology and Philosophy of the Mind, and completed a degree in Artificial
Intelligence and a PhD in Robotics. I continue to work in technology as a
Principal Software Architect all over the United Kingdom.
I am also passionate about human rights as the foundation for a just and
equal society, along with rationality and reason. It seems quite clear to me
that religion is man-made, and that Faith (belief without reason, evidence
or justification) perpetuates an environment where people can believe
anything, allowing ignorance and prejudice to thrive. A world devoid of
Faith and based on free-thought and rationality has the potential to be far
more progressive, peaceful and prosperous than the current world which
suffers from the negative heritage of religion; in areas such as, gender
equality, attitudes to sexual orientation and approaches to penal
rehabilitation.
The prominence of religion within the 'spiritual' realm has kept our
psychological understanding of ourselves in the Dark Ages, based as it is on
unsubstantiated beliefs and largely meaningless platitudes, that stifle
investigation.
As a result of my interest in Human Rights I am a member of Amnesty International and am a trustee of a refugee charity in Slough. I am also a member of the National Secular Society, the British Humanist Association and Atheism, the national United Kingdom organisation for atheism.
I love traveling, which I have done extensively, and have previously lived in the Middle and Far East. I was brought up in Brighton, but now live in the town
of Windsor and enjoy writing, Salsa dancing, travel, swimming and great
food.
