corner An Inconvenient Truth! corner
An Inconvenient Truth!I just saw this film tonight and was very impressed with its rationality and urgency; as well as with the integrity of Al Gore himself. I would urge everyone to see it. Let's make this world the place it was it was meant to be for us and our future!

corner River Walk, San Antonio corner
River Walk, San AntonioDowntown San Antonio seems almost deserted at street level, though still interesting. Descending the few steps down to the river, though, reveals a whole other life of crowds, restaurants and lively bars. You can take a boat tour of the river or just walk along the banks and sit in an open air café watching the world go by.

corner La Tasca, Windsor corner
La Tasca, WindsorThe food was rather mediocre, but they didn't charge us for the corked wine. The trouble with chains is that they have to follow a standard recipe with bulk-bought ingredients. If they allowed their chefs to buy fresh, local produce and add their own touches I'm sure the food would be a lot better.

corner Cadgwith Cove Inn, Cornwall corner
Cadgwith Cove Inn, CornwallThe Inn in Cadgwith Cove is a traditional Cornish pub, in a delightful, secluded, rocky Cornish village. The rooms are a bit basic, but the food served in the bar is tasty and wholesome. The not-to-be-missed highlight of the place is the impromptu singing of sea shanties by local fishermen on a Friday night. If you pick a good night it can be truly magical!

corner Grubbs Burgers, Brighton corner
Grubbs Burgers, BrightonI am not usually a burger eater, but Grubbs, which I remember from my formative drinking years in the late 70's and early 80's cook the best and most delicious burgers in the Universe. It is what they add that makes them so tasty; bananas, pineapple, peanut sauce, chilli and others. My favourites are the Chilli burger and the Hawaiian burger. The prices are good. There is one outlet in Brighton, and one in Hove, which are both take-away only.

corner Latino's, Windsor corner
Latino's, WindsorLatino’s is a small Greek restaurant nicely situated in the ancient lanes around the castle in Windsor. The food is wholesome and reasonably priced, the staff are friendly and the décor is suitably traditional. The lamb kleftiko is delicious.

corner Einstein Bros Bagels, Plano, Texas corner
Einstein Bros Bagels, Plano, TexasMy love of physics governs my choice of dining establishment. Shockingly the waitress didnt know the difference between special and general relativity, claiming that it was irrelevant as superstring theory overcame the limitations of relativity for faster-than-light travel; incontrovertible evidence made apparent to her only last week when she was abducted by aliens! The bagels were tasty and good value with a large variety of interesting fillings.

corner Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream corner
Ben and Jerry's Ice CreamIn the summer there's nothing like a good ice cream, and Ben and Jerry's has a good selection of different varieties. I'm not sure why there are two outlets in the small town of Windsor, but they must do very well when the tourists are around.

corner Strok's Restaurant, Windsor corner
Strok's Restaurant, WindsorSituated in what used to be Sir Christopher Wren's house, and just by the bridge across the river to Eton, elegant Strok's is in a great location, close to Windsor castle. In the summer you can dine out on the veranda overlooking the River Thames and watch the boats, swans and tourists go by. The food and service is excellent and the environment conducive to a delightful dining evening. The prices reflect the quality of the experience, but Strok's is well worth a visit.

corner Claudio's, Windsor corner
Claudio's, WindsorA couple of hours spent on an outside table at Claudio's on a sunny Sunday lunchtime reading the papers was most pleasant. The calamari starter was a bit undercooked, but the duck with orange for the main course was delicious. The white wine, I had three glasses, was excellent, and topped off by an Earl Grey tea and a Cointreau meant that the remainder of the afternoon was definitely unproductive. But, hey, what are Sundays for!

corner Sahara Hotel, Las Vegas corner
Sahara Hotel, Las VegasOnce host to the Beatles, the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas has seen better days. It is a bit run-down these days, but still manages to charge a hefty fee at weekends, especially when there is a fight in town. The restaurants are a bit tacky and the food the usual stodgy American fare. On the up side there is a large swimming pool with plenty of loungers.

corner Paris, Las Vegas corner
Paris, Las VegasThe Paris hotel and casino in Las Vegas is something to behold. The feet of an architecturally correct half-size model of the Eiffel Tower, lay inside the hotel itself. Visitors can walk among the feet of the tower, and slot machines and gaming tables, along faux streets of France, lined with boutiques and French-style restaurants, under a faux blue sky ceiling painted with faux clouds. Little is the need to go to the real France itself!

corner California Pizza Kitchen, Plano, Texas corner
California Pizza Kitchen, Plano, TexasThe California Pizza Kitchen is a well-organised chain serving pizzas with an interesting variety of toppings, as well as pastas and salads all at good prices. The waiting staff have a checklist of tasks to check the customers' satisfaction, which can be somewhat intrusive. But they are generally professional; though the day I visited the trainee serving us was very green and was showing distinctly poor judgement!

corner Calico, California corner
Calico, CaliforniaJust off Highway One in California is Calico a fake Ghost Town. It has everything you would expect mines, saloons, cowboys and popcorn! I'm not sure there is much original left, but it is well worth a visit for a bit of fun.

corner Mad Greek Restaurant, Baker, California corner
Mad Greek Restaurant, Baker, CaliforniaBaker is a town where everything has an angle; there's a Royal Hawaiian motel (which is neither royal nor Hawaiian), the Wills (not Wells) Fargo motel and the Worlds Tallest Thermometer (which is not thermometer), and the Mad Greek restaurant. Which, surprisingly, for a very small town in the middle of nowhere, on the edge of Death valley, seems to have a large variety of traditional Greek delicacies, including some very nice feta cheese parties.

corner Hearst Castle, California corner
Hearst Castle, CaliforniaA visit to the very impressive home of the late Randolph Hearst, now a state museum, was a highlight of the trip to California. Perched on top of a hill far from any neighbours it is just off Highway One and is a sight to see! Just as ostentatious as the great European Castles and Mansions it boats two of the greatest swimming pools I have ever seen (and swimming is a passion of mine); pictures shown. Both are grandiose in different ways, one is surrounded by Grecian columns and statues and the other is indoor and exquisitely tiled in gold and blue.

The interior of the main castle buildings have intricate ceilings imported from Europe and the décor includes the most expensive furniture and rugs available. Along with the indoor cinema and the glamorous reception rooms one can only imagine the decadence of the parties held there at the height of its power.

Oven of Clay, Monterey, CaliforniaHaving travelled as a companion to Jem on the road trip from Las Vegas it is time to part company as we hit Monterrey in California. As a final farewell we have a dinner of traditional English food at India's Oven of Clay! A tasty meal and almost as good as the food at home.

corner Top of the World Restaurant, Stratosphere Tower, Las Vegas corner
Top of the World Restaurant, Stratosphere Tower, Las VegasThe view from the Top of the World restaurant is expensive, but stunning!

The scampi shrimp in brandy sauce was tasty, but the main course, Rack of Lamb, did not live up to expectations. Although the lamb was only slightly underdone the vegetables were well overcooked and the broccoli, particularly, had a definite sulphuric aftertaste! The day was saved by the delicious Chocolate Chip Cheesecake and the impeccable service.

corner Hooters, Dallas corner
Hooters, DallasWith the tag line "Delightfully tacky, yet unrefined" accurately describing the chain you get what you expect at Hooters. The food, clams, wings, shrimp etc is cheap and wholesome though not particularly healthy. It is somewhat surprising that the restaurant attracts families as one of the main "attractions" or selling points seems to be the big-breasted waitresses scantily-clad in vests and tight shorts!
