	Zen and the Art of Travel
San Francisco is a pleasant enough city, though more dirty and run-down than I had imagined. And I was somewhat surprised at the high proportion of down-and-outs wandering the streets, who seem to take over the city at night, even in the upmarket downtown area. The city is reasonably attractive, compared to other American cities, but that is saying little given the bland sanitised urban sprawl of Dallas and the vulgar ostentation of Las Vegas counterfeit culture. Given the gas-guzzling obesity, the greed and fakery and the social drop-outs Ive encountered on my trip along with the gun laws, the high murder rate, the so-called Christian majority, the lack of a sense of history and the war-mongering, I wonder if the most powerful nation on Earth still has not grasped the meaning of Quality, as advocated in one of its most famous books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Perhaps those prepared to spend time reflecting on what is really important will always be overtaken by those with little insight into anything except self-gratification and the thirst to control the world around them by seeking power and exerting it with a ruthless disregard for anything that will stop them fulfilling their warped ambitions.

	Munchies!
As a final salute to the American dream I decide to debase myself to the lowest level of degradation by indulging in one of the quintessential repasts of the Empire, nachos with chilli and cheese; where not only the cheese, but also the chilli is dispensed from a machine! The art of convenience over quality! What progress!?

The peach strudel, to be honest, was a bit tired, as if it had been bought from 7/11. The pistachio ice cream didnt have much taste. The service, though, from Amy was excellent.

The transport system is a bit complicated at first, and mostly buses, but theyre pretty frequent. It took three to get me to the bridge.

	Underwater adventure!
Went for a shivery dive at Point Lobos. Full wetsuit, but still went numb. Depth to 17m, 38 minutes at 9 celcius! Kelp forests and one fish; pretty dull apart from a sea lion. So went to the Aquarium after, where I got this picture!
